31/10/2006   Tesco fined for selling out-of-date food

Just two weeks befor the opening of the new superstore,Tesco has been fined £2,000 for selling out-of-date soup.
The company pleaded guilty to two offences. Carmarthenshire County Council brought the prosecution, which was heard at Llanelli Magistrates Court yesterday.

Trading standards officers received a complaint about the out-of-date "fresh" soup sold in Tesco's Carmarthen store in February.

When they visited the store they found another carton of beef and vegetable soup with a use-by date of some 12 days previously. The following day officers found two different soups past their use-by date of February 15.

Charles Arrand, for Tesco, said the company apologised and that it was a case of human error. Tesco was fined £1,000 for each offence and ordered to pay £759.28 prosecution costs.
