Carmarthenshire County Council tackles chewing gum litter with eco-friendly bins.
The plastic bins, which are bear-shaped, have been put-up in the town centre to combat chewing gum litter.
Carmarthen is the first town in Wales to get involved in the pioneering project, which will be rolled out across the county if successful.
The gum disposers are eco-friendly as all gum is collected by the county council and sent to Gummy Bins Ltd to be recycled into material used for sports ground surfaces.
Chewing gum dropped on the floor is a major problem throughout Carmarthenshire as it is difficult and expensive to remove. Each year the county council spends over ?2 million on cleaning up litter in Carmarthenshire, and ?30,000 has been spent this year alone on removing chewing gum from the three principal town centres of Carmarthen, Ammanford and Llanelli.
The problem is being tackled by the council via the gummy bins and also through enforcement.
Anyone caught dropping chewing gum onto the ground could face a fixed penalty of ?75.
Council environment executive board member Councillor Pam Palmer said: ?The gummy bins have worked well in other authorities and saved a lot of money on cleaning bills.?
?We live in a beautiful area and we all have a responsibility to look after it and dispose of all litter wisely.?
